Close Knit, Close Ties
68” x 49” x 18”. Acrylic on fiberglass. Awarded and Installed Design
This project was done in coordination with the Texas-based grocery company H-E-B, as part of a grant award for the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts on behalf of the competition winning artist. In celebration of the opening of a new store location in San Angelo, Texas, (also my hometown 🏡) the awarded design was tasked with representing both the heritage of the city and the spirit of the grocery store within the community, in the application of a sheep. With a history of leading the wool and mohair industry, the city maintains a public art series of sheep sculptures throughout the neighborhoods.
“Close-Knit”. 22”x28” Acrylic on canvas.
Concept Painting Entry Submission
The concept of the entry began with the wool source, creating a crochet doily of serving and cookware with regional cuisine favorites. Along with highlighting local favorites and a variety of multi-faceted food offerings, H-E-B has various community advancement initiatives in its respective locations. Being such a close-knit town with strong ties inside and out, both entities share the tradition of bringing people together over a tasty meal.
The center piece represents a knit interpretation of the seal of the City of San Angelo, building out in into bakery and dessert favorites, building out in to servingware, building out into more local favorite bites, in the tone of a west central Texas sunset.
The process, in consideration of sculptural final output:
The completed hand-painted sculpture was revealed alongside the original selected concept painting at the ribbon-cutting of the grand opening of the store location.
TIP: The tortillas are remarkable, if you find yourself at an H-E-B, look out for these!
